Speech & Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapy addresses difficulties with swallowing, speech, language and cognitive communication.

Understanding Speech & Language Therapy

Speech & language therapists working in the specialist field of neurorehabilitation, support people who have sustained both traumatic and acquired brain injuries, including stroke, and those with functional neurological disorders (FND). They also provide assessment and intervention for individuals with progressive neurological conditions such as Dementia, Motor Neurone Disease, and Parkinson’s Disease, as well as other complex neurological conditions where communication and swallowing are affected.

Our approach

Intervention typically includes assessment, provision of evidence-based therapy which includes impairment level and functional input, and long-term monitoring, reviews and advice. Input is tailored to each client’s personal goals and what they wish to achieve from therapy, with the aim of optimising their independence and quality of life.

The exploration and use of specialist equipment, technology or language software to support communication skills are considered, alongside the introduction and implementation of low and high tech AAC systems (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) where required.

Speech and language therapists frequently work with family members, support workers, care teams, educational staff or employers, and can provide bespoke training and support packages. This may include conversation partner training, use of a total communication approach and developing language-rich environments for daily communication.

Speech and language therapy is generally provided on a one-to-one basis in the client’s home or identified community setting. Social communication groups are also offered by Arbor – please contact the team for more information.

Specialist Speech & Language Therapy services

Swallowing difficulties

This involves challenges with safely eating, drinking, or swallowing medication. Our specialists can help manage this condition, known clinically as dysphagia, to improve safety and make mealtimes more comfortable and enjoyable.

Motor speech disorders

Sometimes, the muscles required for speech don’t receive the correct messages from the brain. This can result in slurred, slow, or mumbled speech. We provide therapy for these motor speech disorders, such as dysarthria and dyspraxia, to help improve control and coordination.

Cognitive Communication Disorder

Where use of language and communication skills are impacted by cognitive difficulties (including memory, attention, processing speed).

Acquired language difficulties

Including receptive and expressive language skills, and acquired reading and written language difficulties.

Social communication difficulties

Developing skills to understand, interpret, and express language more effectively in everyday interactions.
