Clinical Neuropsychology

Clinical Neuropsychology helps to understand changes in thinking, emotions and behaviour after brain injury or experienced as part of neurological conditions.

Understanding Clinical Neuropsychology

Our approach

Specialist Clinical Neuropsychology services

Cognitive Assessments

We offer full cognitive assessments, which include standardised testing (e.g. memory tests) to identify areas of relative strength and weakness. These assessments help inform rehabilitation goals and tailor interventions to meet specific needs. Our neuropsychologists also consider external factors that can influence cognitive performance, such as mood, stress, and co-morbid health conditions, resulting in a comprehensive neuropsychological formulation of your clinical presentation and ongoing therapeutic needs.

Cognitive rehabilitation

Following your assessment and collaborative formulation, we will work with clients and the team around them to maximise their cognitive functioning and independence. This may include development of compensatory strategies, targeted training to relearn specific information and building skills in awareness and planning for the impact of cognitive changes in tasks / goals.

Adjustment work

Part of the role of Clinical Neuropsychologists is to support clients to incorporate changes they may have experienced following a brain injury into their life and adjust to new expectations of themselves. This therapeutic work may include a number of differing evidence based interventions, and will often include working collaboratively with family members and systems. This can be undertaken in partnership with our own family therapist, Paul Kelly.
Completing vocational assessments, job demands and skills matching, worksite assessments and job analysis, liaison with employers and educational providers and support for individuals seeking new paid employment or voluntary work.

Assistant Psychologists

Providing support to the clinical work of the qualified psychologists, our Assistant Psychologists provide therapeutic intervention, observations, and a cost effective interface between qualified therapists and support teams. They are closely supervised and guided by the qualified clinicians on each case, whilst providing their own experience and individual approaches.

What people say about Arbor

Real experiences from the people who know us best – clients and families we’ve supported, associates who work within our network, and referrers who trust us with their most complex cases.

S suffered a brain haemorrhage which impacted both speech and comprehension. Sarah Gibbin works with S at home most weeks and S has improved greatly during this time. Sarah motivates by recognising interests and always changing the tasks before frustration sets in. S has a great relationship with Sarah and looks forward to her sessions, we would recommend Sarah to anyone.

An extremely thorough and comprehensive report and Sarah’s experience and professional knowledge shine through.

I suffered a severe closed head injury in 1994 and had difficulty coping and learning to live with the various problems it gave me, placing me into a deep depression. I struggled with communication, remembering information and managing my behaviour. By working with Kesta and Sarah, I was taught coping strategies, learning techniques and the tools I need to help me deal with and understand the ‘new me’, helping me to move forward…

… Accepting the effects of my head injury and coming to terms with it is hard to do. Through [Kesta and Sarah’s] help and training, I now have the insight and tools I need to cope with my difficulties and deal with the challenges I face. Not only did I find the psychological and academic support extremely important, it was their care and understanding that helped me to adjust.

I had a RTC a year ago and sustained 2 bleeds to the brain, and a concussion amongst other injuries. I had a lot of rage, depression, stress, and self pity. I worked with Kesta and trusted her immediately she put me at ease so quickly and easily, now we have finished our sessions I am a totally new and confident person, she is nothing short of a miracle worker, she is such a lovely and caring person always had my interests at heart, I can’t praise her enough. She will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you Kesta, you’re absolutely fabulous.

Kesta and her brilliant team at Arbor have been involved in the organisation and implementation of therapy for our wonderful daughter Emily since recently returning home after devastating accident last year. We are a year into her home based rehabilitation journey and we could not be more impressed with every aspect of Arbor’s service.

Having all 4 disciplines provided by Arbor has really helped with communication and joined up working and the quality, experience, compassion and knowledge of every member of the team has been outstanding…

… We are regularly kept up to date with Emily’s therapy journey, we feel like we are able to discuss any concerns with any member of her team and they are always on hand with their expertise or even just reassurance if it is needed. Emily is really happy and confident in her team and has already built strong bonds with everyone, which is really helping with her progress.  We genuinely could not recommend Arbor highly enough
