Neurophysiotherapy
Neurophysiotherapy is a specialist area of physiotherapy focused on restoring movement and independence after injury or disease of the brain or spinal cord.
Understanding Neurophysiotherapy
Arbor’s neurophysiotherapists aim to help people maximise their physical abilities following injury to the central nervous system. This may result from sudden events such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, or spinal cord injury, or from progressive conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or motor neurone disease.
Damage to the central nervous system can cause muscle weakness, sensory changes, altered muscle tone (spasticity or flaccidity), and difficulty generating normal muscle contractions. These changes may affect balance, the ability to sit or stand without support, to walk, climb stairs, or to use the arms effectively for everyday tasks.
Our approach
Neurological injury or disease can affect both physical and cognitive function. For this reason, our neurophysiotherapists rarely work in isolation, but as part of an interdisciplinary team of therapists and medical professionals. We collaborate closely with other Arbor therapists, as well as private or NHS clinicians involved in a person’s care, to ensure a coordinated approach.
All treatment plans are guided by personal goals and designed to maximise physical ability, independence, and quality of life. Appointments may take place at home, in a clinic, at a community exercise facility, or in a hydrotherapy pool, depending on individual needs.
We also work with family members, support workers, and personal trainers, providing training and advice to support rehabilitation programmes and achieve the best possible outcomes.
