Neurophysiotherapy

Neurophysiotherapy is a specialist area of physiotherapy focused on restoring movement and independence after injury or disease of the brain or spinal cord.

Understanding Neurophysiotherapy

Our approach

Specialist Clinical Neurophysiotherapy services

Assessment and treatment

Because the nervous system is highly complex, every person presents differently. Our neurophysiotherapists carry out a detailed initial assessment to identify physical impairments and understand how these affect daily life. This forms the basis for a tailored treatment plan.

Muscles and joints

We assess muscle strength, joint range of movement, tone, sensation, and the ability to generate the coordinated movement patterns required for functional activity. Treatment may involve strengthening exercises, stretching, or repetitive practice of everyday tasks.
Where increased muscle tone (spasticity) affects movement, management may include pain relief, oral medication, botulinum toxin injections, splinting, or, in some cases, tendon-lengthening surgery, delivered in liaison with medical professionals.

Posture

When voluntary movement is limited, supporting good postural alignment is vital to prevent muscle contractures, pain, or pressure areas. Neurophysiotherapists and occupational therapists work closely together to optimise posture and comfort, and to provide suitable equipment such as specialist seating or sleep systems.

Functional abilities

We assess how independently a person can move with or without support. This may involve moving on the bed, transferring between surfaces (e.g. bed to chair), maintaining balance in sitting or standing, walking indoors and outdoors, and climbing stairs. Where these tasks are challenging, we focus on maximising independence.

What people say about Arbor

Real experiences from the people who know us best – clients and families we’ve supported, associates who work within our network, and referrers who trust us with their most complex cases.

S suffered a brain haemorrhage which impacted both speech and comprehension. Sarah Gibbin works with S at home most weeks and S has improved greatly during this time. Sarah motivates by recognising interests and always changing the tasks before frustration sets in. S has a great relationship with Sarah and looks forward to her sessions, we would recommend Sarah to anyone.
