Neurophysiotherapy

Neurophysiotherapy is a specialist area of physiotherapy focused on restoring movement and independence after injury or disease of the brain or spinal cord.

Understanding Neurophysiotherapy

Our approach

Specialist Clinical Neurophysiotherapy services

Assessment and treatment

Because the nervous system is highly complex, every person presents differently. Our neurophysiotherapists carry out a detailed initial assessment to identify physical impairments and understand how these affect daily life. This forms the basis for a tailored treatment plan.

Muscles and joints

We assess muscle strength, joint range of movement, tone, sensation, and the ability to generate the coordinated movement patterns required for functional activity. Treatment may involve strengthening exercises, stretching, or repetitive practice of everyday tasks.
Where increased muscle tone (spasticity) affects movement, management may include pain relief, oral medication, botulinum toxin injections, splinting, or, in some cases, tendon-lengthening surgery, delivered in liaison with medical professionals.

Posture

When voluntary movement is limited, supporting good postural alignment is vital to prevent muscle contractures, pain, or pressure areas. Neurophysiotherapists and occupational therapists work closely together to optimise posture and comfort, and to provide suitable equipment such as specialist seating or sleep systems.

Functional abilities

We assess how independently a person can move with or without support. This may involve moving on the bed, transferring between surfaces (e.g. bed to chair), maintaining balance in sitting or standing, walking indoors and outdoors, and climbing stairs. Where these tasks are challenging, we focus on maximising independence.

Physical activity in the community

Maximising physical potential in everyday life may include goals such as attending a local gym or pool, walking more confidently in busy environments, using public transport, hiking, or getting on and off the ground to enjoy activities like camping.

What people say about Arbor

Real experiences from the people who know us best – clients and families we’ve supported, associates who work within our network, and referrers who trust us with their most complex cases.

S suffered a brain haemorrhage which impacted both speech and comprehension. Sarah Gibbin works with S at home most weeks and S has improved greatly during this time. Sarah motivates by recognising interests and always changing the tasks before frustration sets in. S has a great relationship with Sarah and looks forward to her sessions, we would recommend Sarah to anyone.

I suffered a severe closed head injury in 1994 and had difficulty coping and learning to live with the various problems it gave me, placing me into a deep depression. I struggled with communication, remembering information and managing my behaviour. By working with Kesta and Sarah, I was taught coping strategies, learning techniques and the tools I need to help me deal with and understand the ‘new me’, helping me to move forward…

… Accepting the effects of my head injury and coming to terms with it is hard to do. Through [Kesta and Sarah’s] help and training, I now have the insight and tools I need to cope with my difficulties and deal with the challenges I face. Not only did I find the psychological and academic support extremely important, it was their care and understanding that helped me to adjust.

I had a RTC a year ago and sustained 2 bleeds to the brain, and a concussion amongst other injuries. I had a lot of rage, depression, stress, and self pity. I worked with Kesta and trusted her immediately she put me at ease so quickly and easily, now we have finished our sessions I am a totally new and confident person, she is nothing short of a miracle worker, she is such a lovely and caring person always had my interests at heart, I can’t praise her enough. She will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you Kesta, you’re absolutely fabulous.

Kesta and her brilliant team at Arbor have been involved in the organisation and implementation of therapy for our wonderful daughter Emily since recently returning home after devastating accident last year. We are a year into her home based rehabilitation journey and we could not be more impressed with every aspect of Arbor’s service.

Having all 4 disciplines provided by Arbor has really helped with communication and joined up working and the quality, experience, compassion and knowledge of every member of the team has been outstanding…

… We are regularly kept up to date with Emily’s therapy journey, we feel like we are able to discuss any concerns with any member of her team and they are always on hand with their expertise or even just reassurance if it is needed. Emily is really happy and confident in her team and has already built strong bonds with everyone, which is really helping with her progress.  We genuinely could not recommend Arbor highly enough
